Too hot to handle

15th August, 2025

As temperatures soar, it’s crucial to remember that pets are highly vulnerable to heat. Dogs, cats, and rabbits can't cool down as easily as humans, and hot weather can quickly become life-threatening if precautions aren't taken.

Heatstroke: A Deadly Risk

Heatstroke in pets can occur in minutes - especially in dogs. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, and collapse. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs are at even higher risk, along with older pets, overweight animals, and those with underlying health conditions.

Never leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures can rise to fatal levels quickly, even on a cloudy day.

Pavement Dangers

Hot tarmac can burn paws. A simple rule: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler, and always carry water.

Rabbits & Small Pets

Rabbits and small furries like guinea pigs can easily overheat in hutches exposed to the sun. Move hutches into shaded, well-ventilated areas and ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water. Watch for signs of heat stress; fast breathing, red ears, and lethargy.

Summer Pet Safety Tips

  • Provide constant fresh water and shade.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise in high temperatures.
  • Use pet-safe cooling mats indoors.
  • Keep up with flea and tick prevention, as these critters thrive in summer.
