No need for a ruff night

07th November, 2025

Bonfire Night can be exciting for us, but for many pets it’s a frightening experience. This weekend, loud bangs, flashes of light, and unusual smells could cause stress and anxiety, so a little preparation can make a big difference.

Create a safe space indoors where your pet feels secure - a favourite bed, blanket, or crate in a quiet room with the curtains drawn. Playing calming music or leaving the TV on can help to mask sudden noises.

If you have a dog, try to walk them earlier in the day before fireworks begin, and always keep them on a lead in case they are startled. For cats, ensure they are kept inside, and check that windows, doors, and cat flaps are secure.

Small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs can also be affected. Move outdoor hutches into a shed or garage if possible, and provide extra bedding to help them feel hidden and safe.

Finally, try to stay calm yourself. Pets often pick up on our emotions, and reassurance from you will help them cope better.
