Hedgehog Awareness Week is an annual campaign by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) to highlight the challenges hedgehogs face and how we can help them. Held every May, the week focuses on:

• Hedgehog-friendly gardening – Leave wild areas, create log piles, and avoid pesticides.
• Safe habitats – Ensure access with small fence gaps and provide shelter.
• Responsible care – Check bonfires before lighting and avoid strimming long grass.
• Raising awareness – Spread the word, fundraise, and support conservation efforts.

With hedgehog numbers declining, small changes can make a big difference in protecting these beloved garden visitors!

To help the hedgehog population, you can:

• Build hedgehog highways – Create gaps in fences to allow safe passage.
• Provide food and water – Offer fresh water and specially designed hedgehog food, especially during autumn and winter.
• Create safe nesting sites – Leave piles of leaves or old wood for shelter.
